Chart Comparing Business Status Boards

Below is the most comprehensive and well-researched survey of business status boards on the Internet today. There are many great boards, and you'll want to choose according to your needs and according to your budget.

Most of the in-out boards below primarily look at a user's status, i.e., what they are doing (in, out, at lunch, vacation, meeting, working at home, etc.). The Business PSB and Business PSB Plus (as well as the Social PSBs) go one step further and include a wider context: not only statuses of what the users are doing, but also what they need (help with computer, assistance with a project, more resources for the project, problems with the project, etc.) In this way, users can communicate needs without spending time tracking down those who can help; e.g., if there's a computer problem, the IT department will see it when it's posted and can immediately schedule a time to help. If a manager sees that a project needs more resources, s/he can immediately find out from the status posting, and begin to find solutions without a lot of extra time consuming communications.

In addition, Business PSB and Business PSB Plus (as well as the Social PSBs) provide the space for long statuses, thus freeing up users from having to enter a lot of details in their comments. For example, "Need new project assignment" immediately tells a manager that s/he needs to assign work to someone who doesn't have anything to do! Although many of the boards offer unlimited users, most are licenses for just one board. The Business PSB and Business PSB Plus (as well as the Social PSBs) allow unlimited boards, unlimited members, and unlimited users, from just a single license, as long as these are all managed from a single database.

Notes:
1Connects to a shareware site where product can be downloaded. Purchase link lands on page with no content.
2Number of visible users depends on screen resolution and monitor size and total number of users.    Many products offer filtering
so users can view other users by category or department. Usually the user must scroll to see the entire list.
3This refers to user control of status refresh rate. Many programs allow no control (immediate updating), although some allow
long intervals.  In some cases the admin controls the interval, in others users have control.
4Links to a shareware site. Attempts to download land at a parked page.
5No longer available
6Unless noted, price is for unlimited users.
7Product doesn't seem to actually be downloadable. All site email addresses bounce. Download sites don't have it.
8Most support is via email or forums; those who charge for support usually provide the first 6-12 months free; a few charge
for only phone or emergency support.
9Internet access via smart phone with browser capability or specific mobile apps rather than sophisticated measures taken to
access a local network.
10Many programs have built in messaging and email, thus duplicating tools that most users already have.
11Most small businesses do not have local servers. So products requiring these have a disadvantage. A "no" answer here means
a local server is required. Some products can optionally be installed on a local server.
12Companies with n/a designations either didn't respond to our requests for information (emails bounced or they simply
did not respond), or websites with contact information did not exist, which indicates that there would be no support.
